A Few Lancashire Drains
One weekend, while I was working in Stockport, I headed up to Lancashire to see what I could get in, on or under. I managed to do Solicitor in Preston, the orphanage there, Cavalier Attitude in Blackburn, The Croal Culverts and Double Drop in Bolton and the lower end of the Majestic Culverts in Oldham. I’ve put them together in one thread as none of them are worthy of a thread in their own right due to lack of memory and also a lack of decent pics! Regretfully, it was more quantity over quality and I should’ve done this sooner. I do remember it being a right good weekend of draining around Lancashire though. I’d recommend all of them as a nice mooch.
Inspired by Ojay and Concrete Jungle…..again
Solicitor
Solicitor is a culvert carrying the Eaves Brook into the Savick Brook just north of Preston. There’s plenty of changes in style, some quite unique, and lots of calcification. All very photogenic if you know what you’re doing, which at the time, I didn’t.
I take pics on the way back, usually, and as these are in numerical order they’re from downstream end to upstream
Cavalier Attitude, Blackburn
Raddog found this and did a rather nice post on here about it. For some history I’d rather divert you to his thread than copy and paste his hard work
There’s stoopy, new bits, nice, old bits and fresh, sewer bits

The lower Culverts
Double Drop – I wasn’t expecting to find this but was pleased when I did. Access involved some squeezing shall we say. As you can see photos are hideously awkward to take due to lack of room but would look mint with a fisheye and/ or companion (of which I had neither) I think I only saw the single drop as I didn’t fancy going further up 4ft RCP which seemed to go on for ever. It carries a small water course and rainwater off the road for most of its length but as Ojay explained in his more detailed report a nearby pumping station can also overflow into it.
This is the drop – approx. 5m with ladders beside it
And this is the 4ft concrete pipe that drops into it
Back out and further upstream along The Croal
Old looking bridges
Into the main upper culvert
I seem to remember finding some interesting history on this bridge when I did it but can’t now.

Anyway, it’s really old (c1700’s IIRC) as is the timber fence. I tried (hard) to get up onto the bridge but gave up after realising I’d probably break my neck (and would almost certainly break my legs getting off!)
Majestic Culverts, Oldham
The River Medlock essentially starts at Strinesdale Reservoir, north-east of Oldham. I didn’t realise at the time but the Majestic Culverts are a series of several culverts. I only did the lower one but would like to return to do the rest and get a better understanding of what used to happen along this stretch of The Medlock as from what I’ve since read in (the many) other reports it’s an interesting area with a rich history. Unfortunately, apart from remembering it was very nice, I don’t remember much else so it’s pics only I’m afraid. I started at the outfall and walked upstream and the pics are in that order.
