HISTORY- the abc cinema opened in 1931 after aquiring the building the year before and was known as one of the finest cinemas of the era . designed by A E SHANNON this grand fascaded building was in a prime location being across the road from lime st station a major traffic hub of the north .
the cinema received a grade 2 listing way back in early 1981.
The world premier of FUNERAL IN BERLIN was held in the reception area , champagne was given out to patrons and MICHAEL CAINE the films star was in attendance !
in the early 1980s the abc was converted from one screen to 3 , screens 2 and 3 being housed under the main balcony of this massive cinema , each contained well over 200 seats each .

THE EXPLORE- after receiving a tip off from fellow explorers that the cinema was accessible , even though it was sunday night and i had work the next day ,...i thought its now or never !!!! i rang up my derping partner @Cazel#HT and told her we were going ! i explained that we may never get the chance again as the builders would find the entrance and shut it forever !! when we got in , we was surprised at the sheer size of the place ! we found the building workers lighting system and switched it on for our benefit , we explored nearly every nook n cranny of the place , we even found a room full of movie camera lenses !

THE PICS- as usual i was using my canon 10-18mm wide angled lens , i struggled in parts as my flash was,nt strong enough , also the dust played havoc with some of my pics , i shall now let the pics do the talking .
ENJOY THE PICS FOLKS !

Really good photo's. I remember this cinema well. My dad used to chief projectionist and manage part of the cinema in the 70's and early 80's. Picture of the winder was used for winding all the various reels of films back after use and to check if there were any breaks in the film. Boring job that had to be done every night. I remember my dad breaking his finger using that machine. Have you ever been inside the ABC in Argyle Street, Birkenhead? He used to work there as well in the 60's mainly.
