What remains of Adelphi Lads Club is due to be demolished to make way for social housing. It was formerly the Adelphi Ragged School and was purposed to give the young people of Salford something to occupy them and keep them off the streets. The Ragged School was set up in 1868 and was located at a site near to the present one in Cannon St. The Adelphi Lads' Club has been involved in many activities during its long history and it even housed its own cinema at one time. The history of this site reaches back 100 years. Activities available to the children there varied from books and clog repairs, Football, Squash, Basketball, Snooker, Boxing to Painting and Singing classes.
Following it's closure in 2008 the building caught fire in 2010 and was quite damaged, and destroyed a lot of memorabilia. However the remainder of the building was reutilised as a Bar and Kitchen for a brief period before closing down. Upon arrival the grounds were full of brick rubble and litter, inside the building was pretty trashed but with pieces of history such as vintage bibles, hymn books dating from the 1930's, vintage fire extinguishers, signs of the typical arsonists damage, and tons of bird poop. there was a basement section below the basketball court which I was able to get into. Looks like it had a grow op in there at one point with the typical botched up blue water piping that I have seen in a few places. Enjoy the images!
