@admin If appropriate could this please be shifted to non public. Still early days for this place don't want to stick my foot in anything. Ta!
History
“AEI stated that it was unable to continue manufacturing and will continue as a sales-only business. It is also proposing to enter a company voluntary arrangement.
The majority of the company's 198 employees left on or before Friday (6 January 2017).
As part of a phased closure, approximately 40 employees will continue working until the beginning of March. Some 13 sales and administration staff will stay on working for the cable manufacturer after September.”
As far as I understand the company voluntary agreement means that AEI won’t pay pensions to it’s staff which seems like a bit of a farse when AEI’s parent company is still in operation in the UAE.
AEI’s Birtley factory opened in 1950 and specialised in “the design and manufacture of elastomeric and thermoplastic cables for voltages up to 20kV. These included high performance PTFE and ETFE thinwall cables and wires, a range of Rail Transportation System cables and a fire performance cable range.”

The Visit
I played this one cautiously and was only on site for a couple of hours tops, so this is far from comprehensive, there is a lot more to see, all of these shots are from inside the main building with much of it being unphotographable due to being pitch black, most of the shots were handheld, I got the tripod out for a few. Apologies for the lack of write up but I know nothing about the cable manufacturing process.
