The power station supplied electricity to a huge ironworks. It was built in the 1890s. At its peak, the smelter produced 400,000 tons of cast iron a year and employed nearly 3,000 people. It was closed in the early 1990s. Most of the buildings were demolished, only one of the six blast furnaces and several smaller buildings remained. The unusual power plant has also survived.
