I’ve been putting this off in favour of topside stuff for too long.
This part of Saffron Brook flows under the streets of the Saffron Lane estate and the old velodrome / athletics stadium car park.
I chose the left bore in favour of the stoopy right.
It starts off as a 4’6" high concrete box where it goes under the road then rises to about 6’ after the first hundred yards.
A couple of turns and another 600 yards and I came to this movable damn thing.
As I looked over the top I got a horrible feeling of foreboding…impending doom… balefulness in fact, at the 4’ of water it was holding back.
And I’ve no idea what makes it move. Or when.
I’m open to suggestions but I guess this is storm water relief?
You might just see that there’s a branch off just upstream. It comes out right next to the outflow of this one in the first photo.
Back the way I came looks inviting.
Fairly recent tidal debris at about 4’.
Looking downstream from the outfall.
