Burnden Culvert and Viaduct, Bolton
September 2012 - Explored with Kenni and ViralEye
The culvert was constructed in the late 60s to take the River Croal under the newly built Farnworth and Kearsley bypass. Constructed of twin pre cast concrete box the culvert is quite short and featureless but looking upwards at the outfall we saw the magnificent looking Burnden viaduct.
Completed in 1848 the viaduct carried the Bolton to Bury railway until 1951 and its final closure to freight trains in 1970. It would have been rude of us not to have a closer look, so up we went. Once on top theres really not much to see with some uninspiring views of the A666 below.
