The extract below is taken from a report that appeared in the Suffolk free Press around a year after BBA was bought out by rival IFF:
BBA, an international company with dozens of sites worldwide, was taken over in November 2000 by giant rival IFF.
Less than a year later IFF the world's biggest maker of flavours and fragrances announced the Melford site was to close.
Since then the factory, established in 1899, has been slowly winding down.
Most of the 115 employees, some of whom were grandchildren of the original workforce, were made redundant. A few transferred to IFF's site in Haverhill. Four other BBA sites in the UK have also been shut or sold.
The site mainly processed onions for their sugars (as mentioned in Cupids inspiration's report Jan 13) and oils, and used these for medicines and flavours. There is a company of some sort using some of the buildings for Celotex insulation board storage (its everywhere!) and one of the smaller buildings is used as an Art studio. Part of one building was used by paintballers for a while although it looks like they've not been there for some time. All very open and a very casual mooch. Sad to say that there is very little in the way of industrial equipment, but happy to say that there is zero graffiti. The arial photo is stolen from Cupids inspiration who myself and my son went with on the day.
hope the pics are ok, I've tried to show some different angles etc from CI's report!
