The CARA di Mineo refugee camp, located in Sicily, Italy, was once Europe's largest reception center for asylum seekers. Established in 2011 on a former American military base, it housed up to 4,000 people at its peak, though this exceeded its intended capacity. The camp became infamous for overcrowding, violence, and mismanagement, and criminal activities. It was also criticized for the lengthy waiting times asylum seekers faced while their applications were processed.
In 2019, under the leadership of Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, the camp was closed as part of a broader anti-migration policy.
Huge place, great accommodation, the main bedrooms have on-suite bathrooms. Must have cost many millions and its just rotting away now.
