Yet another long weekend in Germany saw Wea5le and I looking for a different route home and so we chose the long way, via Luxembourg.
CT is abandoned power station complex in the industrial heart of Luxembourg.
In the late 1870s there were four blast furnaces in the region. Over the years many more blast furnaces were constructed. This led to the boom of the Luxembourg steel industry and turned it into one of the largest producers of steel in Europe. Originally, only the gas which was produced by the creation of cokes was used to generate electricity. Later on a new process was discovered that meant the furnace gas, which was released by the melting of the steel, could be used to produce electricity. In 1951 the Centrale Thermique was built specifically so that this newly developed technique could be used and so provide electricity for the surrounding industry and homes. When the last furnace in the region was shut down in 1997, the power station lost its purpose and was left abandoned.
