Church of St Saviour’s, Bacup, Rossendale. October 2013...
Or also entitled as a “no I didn’t get into the tower either†report" (!) although I have a fair idea now after thinking about it, and am kicking myself that I didn’t persevere.. but time was pressing and I had another site in mind.
Its had a lot of love of late, this lovely little church. Visited one quiet morning, when after being inside for a while and taking a few pictures, I heard footsteps outside the building and then had the pleasure of bumping into Telf1980, MSP and his son Ellis (who is a fantastic lad, really enthusiastic.. and nice to see future generations of explorers taking such a keen interest!)
Constructed in the mid 1860’s to a design by Edward Wyndham Tarn, the church was Grade II listed in 1984 for its architectural and historical merit. In 1985 a single storey church hall was built at the west end. Dwindling congregation numbers as well as high maintenance costs led to the church council seeking to close the building for public worship.
The Church held it's final service in October 2007 and the parish merged with Holy Trinity, Tunstead.
