This is another one of the eight deep-level air-raid shelters that were built under London Underground stations during World War II. They were started in 1940 and completed in 1942 and originally all used by the government, but as bombing intensified five of them were opened to the public in 1944: Stockwell, Clapham North, Camden Town, Belsize Park and Clapham South. Each shelter was designed to hold up to 8,000 and consisted of two parallel tunnels subdivided into two decks. It was planned that after the war the shelters would be used as part of new express tube lines paralleling parts of the existing Northern and Central lines. This is why they were constructed underneath stations, however this never happened for various reasons. The Clapham North shelter was purchased in 2014 by the Zero Carbon Food company, who used the shelter as a hydroponic farm until recently. Once again it remains disused.
Someone mentioned they'd heard this was empty again a while back but I wasn't convinced. I'd seen some recent footage from the hydroponic farm growing cress down there and it seemed as though they were still in business. Turns out growing cress was a shit idea so they packed up and fooked off at some point. Good to see another one of these, totally empty inside but still a fascinating place nonetheless. Cheers @PatientTheory for the heads up. Visited with @Maniac, @extreme_ironing, and @elliot5200.
