Afternoon Guys,
Introduction
This site has been done many times before, and is a must see for any explorers in the locality. The weather was rather grim, and I must confess my fear of heights forced me to chicken out at the very end on the last ladder up to the very top ... but I’m still happy with the majority of the headstock I did climb, more than I would have done a year ago!
History
The colliery was opened in 1922, and the shafts are 920m deep. The headstocks are 62m high and are the tallest in Europe, and possibly the third tallest in the world.
The headstocks dominate the village:
As high as I went

Regards,
