After Mansfield Brewery we decided to take a drive over to Coalite to see what was left. Unfortunately the offices really have been gutted by the fire, and paperwork was all but gone. A few scraps remained, but most of it was ash. A shame, as a lot of it went back nearly 100 years.
Next we found our way into the main site, where it was obvious that the distinctive towers had been demolished, along with the control room which I'd never got to see. We did find an interesting wooden cooling tower which was accessible, and we managed to climb up to the roof. Finally we made it inside the workers' canteen but better than that, the laboratory!
In here, samples were tested for pollution assessment amongst other things, and the place was rammed full of equipment.
Unfortunately though, the days of Coalite are long gone, and within a couple of weeks there'll be little left at all, the site being cleared ready for new owners.
Goodbye, Coalite!
