Abandoned? Are you confusing Copehill with Imber?

And I wouldn't say used occasionally... Copehill Down is used most days of the year as a purpose built Fighting In Built Up Areas (FIBUA) training environment. Covered in cameras and always has a military guard presence. Me and Oort know that very well. The buildings are only shells and are completely bare inside with only the facade of a petrol station, restaurant or whatever.
