The Paper Mill in Hendon originally opened in 1872. In 1981 it was bought by the Edward Thompson Group, with much of the site being wound down until 2006 when the site closed with the loss of 94 jobs. One of the warehouses was used to store scratch cards and bingo tickets until 2015. Stripping of the buildings started in the summer this year with planning permission for 300 new homes in place - however operations have been halted due to the discovery of some rare species of bats.
