The esplanade tunnels are made up of 3 sections called athol, Guilford and trevanion. Athol is the eastern section and trevanion is the western section connected together by the 400m long Guilford tunnel. The tunnels began from the early 1800’s and were added to in the 1930’s/40’s for the start of WW2.
The explore: now I started my interest in tunnels/mines back in 2014 and soon found that Dover is pretty much hollow with the amount of underground gems it has. One of those gems is the esplanade tunnels, now this little gem has been on my list of to do from the start and I always have missed out on the opportunity to see them for as soon as they were opened the tour buses arrived which lead to them promptly being sealed again! After seeing a report pop up on them I knew this was the opportunity I’ve been waiting for so I took it with both hands and believe me they didn’t disappoint! This is my favourite Dover explore so far to date! Now excuse the quality of the photos as exploring is more my thing rather than photography but I hope you enjoy none the less!
