On my 16th birthday I received my first proper camera - the Nikon Coolpix b500. The week later, my parents and I took a trip down to Devon to visit my brother and his partner in North Tawton. I was just researching the town's history when I found something about a wool mill. I researched further and found that a large wool mill had once dominated the small Devonshire town. After a quick search on Google Maps, I located it. About a mile from my brothers, all down hill. Steep hill I should add. So off I went to the mill.
The Explore:
Access was super easy. No security whatsoever. Only friendly locals whom I had a really good chat with about the place. Apparently it had closed as a mill back in the 1940s and became a wool grading centre, which itself finally closed in 1992. For somewhere that had been derelict for 24 years (at the time of taking these photos), it was in surprisingly good condition. Not toooooo much vandalism and a lot of natural decay. THe weaving sheds were still there at that point (they have now been demolished) with some interesting features. The oldest parts of the mill date back to the 16th century if I remember correctly and I think I located those old parts.
Anyway, enjoy the pics! Excuse the somewhat ropey photos. I was still new to the whole gig!
This thing is a water turbine. All clogged up with muck though.
This is the generator system.
Ironically, despite its appearance, this is the oldest building!
I touched this photo up a tad and am super pleased with how it looks!
And then, a stupid photo of a 16 year old me trying to look cool with photography. :^)
Thanks for readin'!
