The Gildersome tunnel is toxic, the Bombay Mix of tunnels.
Poison air by the through chamber & mid way point,
wading through stagnant water & 2 foot of iron ore deposits while dodging catch pits or debris.
It's a long & tiresome walk to the brick wall, then there's the return 2.649 miles altogether.
The Gildersome tunnel is 1 mile, 571yds long
running from Gildersome (east) to Birstall (west), runs beneath part of the M62 motorway.
The east portal lies in a cutting with retaining walls, which are in average condition
there's 4 air shafts (all capped) except no 3 which has a chimney at surface level
there's refuges on both sides of the tunnel staggering one another, one which has a through chamber
the west portal is buried beneath the M62 motorway nothing remains of it at street level.
The tunnel opened in 1900 , closed in 1966
The whole tunnel is suffering water ingress &, iron ore deposits
which drains away in the east cutting because of a 1 in 70 gradient.
