This is it...the post that I beg forgiveness for not including a history.
The purpose is clear - the manway was a route from the quarry downhill under the High Peak & Buxton Junction Railway line. For some reason most people think it's a flue for the removed Hoffmann Kiln but the location makes no sense for that plus early 1900's mapping clearly shows a mineral line. Part brick, part stone, part exposed rock. Recent signs of digging at the back-filled quarry end. No sign of tracks though there are a few sleeper marks in places.
