The mill has been closed for 15 yrs, which shows with rotten beams & floor boards
step off the main staircases & your on a suicide mission.
(I kept my right foot on the concrete staircase while holding a handrail of sorts
as I put my left foot on the floor it collapsed along with 2 floors below)
I saw no rats while in there, as there's few beams & no floors for them to walk on
besides they have likely ate all the remaining rice yrs ago.
Due to the poor condition of the mill, a lot of photographs were taken via the 2 main staircases
I am not prepared to risk my health for a few photographs.
Heaps mill was founded in 1778 by Joseph Heap, trading as Joseph Heap & sons
initially a rice mill with warehouses added, then becoming a single building.
Until the 1880's they had their own vessels, known as the Diamond H Line
they had a contract with Kellogg's to ground rice for rice krispies.
The firm was operating until 1988, then transferred to a new site on Regent street
the mill was partially operational until 2005.
The 7 storey building consists of a slate roof & red brick walls, with a frame of iron or timber
& was grade 2 listed in 2014.
The building was sold in 2015 & again in 2019 to become apartments, but no work has yet commenced.
