Hendon Gasworks was designed by Thomas and Charles Hawksley
opened in 1860 with 2 holders then increasing too 4 holders
closed in 1908 for modernising reopening in 1909,
the 2 north holders no. 1 and no. 2 were removed during 1990 - 91
leaving the 2 south holders no. 3 and no. 4 which remain today
holder no. 5 is a self supporting tank.
Holders no. 3 and no. 4 remain flat, these are used for maintaining the pressure of the pipes
while holder no. 5 lifts on occasions.
The lids of holders no. 3 and no. 4 are in a bad way, theres a leak from holder no. 4.

holder no. 3 (grade 2 listed)
1860 frame with cast iron colums and wrought iron tie bars,
with 2 sections.

Seen better days they have, but good to see all the same, all these old gas works are slowly vanishing I think next couple of years and there will be few or any holders left up and down the country

Very nice photographs and report, ive done the local one (have to get a report up soon) The ones in my town are over 100 years old, and they didn't feel too clever in the middle bouncy as hell, I was on my own as well so though better of it.

Going back with a friend soon, so will have a go across the middle! The flex is a little offputting though, not a nice feeling lol :D

these were built during the 1860s & 1900s,

Nice report

Yet to do a gas holder, they look fun. There's a local one near me that I keep meaning to have a go at, wasn't aware that they were "bouncy" though so that's good to know!
