The site was originally built in the late 1770's as the Hexham Workhouse, and kept this function until the early 20th Century. After a short spell being used for military purposes, the site became part of Hexham General Hospital in 1948. It continued to be used as a Hospital until 2004 when the new buildings were opened directly over the road. Some parts were used to store old equipment and records, one section was rented to Helen McArdle Care and one part leased to a Therapy Centre with the Therapy Centre the last to move out last year. Many parts of the site were abandoned at different times so there is varying stages of decay. The site is piled high with old junk. With one room filled floor to ceiling with zimmer frames and several piled high with mattresses.
Since our visit I am led to believe it has been securely boarded up. The place was swarming with kids who were quizzing us about 28dl and smashing things. After being told in no uncertain terms to stop pissing about they did manage it for about 30 mins before they started dragging old mattresses onto the main road to do back flips. Very inventive but not really what you want when you're trying to be inconspicuous so it cut the visit slightly short!
We went here following the excellent report and write up by WildBoyz - so thanks for the heads up guys!
