Holme Bank and Holme Farm chert mines were in operation for over 150 years. Initially as separate entities and then as one. The stone was also quarried at the surface.
During the latter part of it's life the site was primarily used to produce cement blocks rather than block stone.
Part of the mine is flooded and used for mine diving training.
Photos are from two visits on the same day (locals were made aware we'd be there at night to save them needlessly calling the police).
It's featured plenty of times before so rather than repeat all the same 'wide' photos I'll add some variety
There are plenty of good examples of rust shells in the mine
Rails, pipework and wheels are common
When we picked this up it still smelled of varnish
Can't resist a bit of pipework porn and what better than a rusty diaphragm valve
Coloured cave worms devouring a plug?
Another favourite...reflections
Water level was a bit lower than normal on this visit
The cement mixer looks better at night
