The History:
Holsten-Brauerei AG is a brewing company created in 1879. With its first site in Hamburg, it now has seven breweries in Germany.
They tried to set up a location in London In 1902, but trade suffered from anti-German sentiment during the First World War and it closed in 1920.
In 2003 Holsten absorbed the Bavaria – St. Pauli Brewery with their main brand Astra. But then in 2004 the company was acquired by Carlsberg for £735 million.
Because capacity at the site had not been fully utilized for many years, they decided to start work on a new location in 2017, following its completion in 2019 the old site was fully closed and sold to a real estate developer to create 1500 flats, offices, retail outlets and a hotel. This was supposed to start in 2021 and although many of the buildings have now been demolished, work has been constantly delayed and plans for the site keep changing.
The Explore:
I only managed to fully see this place after a couple of trips. With work on the site seemingly halted, it wasn't too hard to sneak by the few camera poles they had at the time. The site was vast and it was a shame I never had the chance to see more of the buildings before they had gone, but the three that remained had more than enough to see.
Thanks for taking a look!
