Since reading The Lord Of The Rings trilogy during quarantine I've been a'hungerin for some adventure. After some digging I came across UrbEx and decided I would give it a try for myself, but it took a while to find the right location; if i was gonna pop my Urbex cherry I wanted it to be somewhere special. Some further digging brought the Southall Honey Monster Factory to my attention. Being just old enough to remember tv adverts for honey puffs but young enough for the beloved furry mascot to be mentally scarring, I felt a close connection to the site and felt that it was the one.
I was excited to set sails but due to Corvid I decided I would wait a month before going.
A Brief History
Honey Monster Puffs were first launched in 1957, with Jeremy the Bear. They were invented by William Halliday Davies (1919–2009), production manager at the Quaker Oats mill in Southall. For many years they were made by the Quaker Oats Company, but in 2006 they were sold to Big Bear Honey Monster Foods, based in Leicester.
The Southall-based production site was the sole producer and distributor of Honey Puffs for decades up until 2015, where the site was shut down and operations were moved to a site in South Wales
In 2017 the site was sold to housing developers and plans are for it to build 1,200 properties aimed at first and second-time buyers.
The ExploreOn the 29th of June 2020 I first attempted to enter the site. I found a way past the fences and approached the factory. The first thing you notice is just how HUGE the place is.
At its tallest this site boasts 13 floors.
The first visit unfortunately ended prematurely. After I climbed up a tall pile of rocks I heard a dog barking in the distance which (combined with my noobie nerves) was enough to scare me off the premises. In hindsight I'm pretty sure that the dog wasn't a guard dog, probably just a pet from the houses nearby and it's barking was just a coincidence. Oops.
The second visit was a week later on the 5th of July. This was a bit more successful as I explored more of the outside, but I didn't manage to get into the factory.
^ A view through the window.
Finally, on the 12th of July, I managed to find my way inside.
^ Relax, it's not what it looks like. I know it looks like jugs of paprika based food colouring but it's actually blood
^ The factory advertises it's policy on trespassers
The box on the left is approx 2 meters tall
Apologies for the camera quality on these 2, a pigeon scared the hell out of me a few seconds before and my hands were shaking.
View from the top. Absolutely beautiful
Thanks for reading my first report! Please mention any improvements I could make in the future.
