Inverkip Powerstation
With- Hidden Shadow, NickUK, Tweek, Fishbrain, Gone, Sho and Millhouse. Thanks for a great trip lads, the journey was almost as much fun as the explore itself!
For those who don't know, Inverkip is an mothballed powerstation on the Firth of Clyde in Scotland, in theory it could be restarted and used to generate again.
Construction began in 1970 and was finished just in time for the 70's oil crisis to render it uneconomical. The only time Inverkip generated electricity comercially was during the miners' strike of 1984-1985.
It's chimney, at 236 metres is Scotlands tallest free-standing structure, made from 1,400,000 bricks and 20,000 tons of cement.
There's a lot more detail here if anyone's interested.
I'd been trying to talk Hidden Shadow into a trip here for months, although I didn't have quite so many people in mind... Not to worry though, everything went perfectly- even the regular de-icing stops for Millhouse's van
Inverkip is indeed a special place to visit. The 1970's control room is straight out of Battlestar Galactica, while the size of the turbine hall is staggering the first time you see it in daylight.
There has been almost no vandalism or pikying, probably due to the fearsome fence surrounding the site. The only damage seems to be in and around the control room.
One of the three Parsons 676 megawatt turbo-generators
Turbine hall
Cheers
