The mine was Europes last working iron ore mine, operating until 2007. The iron ore was originally used for the production of pig iron which was made into steel, however with demand getting smaller and new technologies coming in, iron from the mine was eventually demoted for use as paint pigment and annealing ore. The site is literally covered in red iron dust, and within 2 minutes we were aswell. Reminded me of stories I've been told about when Consett Steel Works opened it's blast furnesses once a week and unloaded a cloud of red smoke and ash over the town.
