Around the mid 1800's, Birmingham was becoming the industrial city it is famous for being. Hundreds of tiny workshops were being built, many of which manufacturing "toys". These were not the child's plaything that we know the word as today, but many items such as buttons, snuff boxes, belt buckels etc.
This works has been unmodernised and although empty, paints a picture of what those workshops were like. They were very very basic, and it is almost hard to believe such beautiful and valuable items came out of such hovels! It must have been freezing in the winter standing at a workbench all day with only a tiny electric strip heater and single pane iron framed windows fighting off the bitter cold outside.
I found evidence of spectacle, jewelery and kitchenware manufacture on the site with a bit of raking.
