Joseph Clayton & Sons, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

The firm of Joseph Clayton & Sons (Chesterfield) Ltd, Tanners and Curriers was founded in 1840 with the first works being established in Spa Lane, Chesterfield and as business increased extended to a second site in Clayton Street, Chesterfield. Eventually the Spa Lane works were closed and the whole of the business concentrated and expanded in Clayton Street.

The company manufactured various leather goods for 178 years before going into administration in 2018 due to a decline in orders. They were purchased by Spire Leather Company who themselves were wound up in 2022.

Visited with @Gsxrwayne and also bumped into @Esoteric Eric along the way. Seen this place a load of times getting the train to Sheffield and didn't even know it'd closed, fail!

Posting this as soon as just in case anyone here wanted a look as it’s currently being demolished… Also due to boredom and Sunday evening blues!

There was lots of tanning drums where over a period of time the hides are slowly rotated into different drums with higher concentrations of tanning agents

That's fantastic, the tanning drums are especially lovely. Stuff like this gives me hope that such timeless industry is still going, though that of course makes it all the more unfortunate when they do finally go under!

Yeah some bits are gone and there's a digger sat in the main bit with some ploughed up floor.

Can't see a planning application for demolition though!

I saw it on fb somwhere. Dont think it was named but obviously not that hard to work out!

Did one in Cornwall many years ago with broadly the same machinery but much smaller.
