Report - Kellingley Colliery Oct 2016

[Cloth Head]

Kellingley Colliery was the last deep coal mine in Britain. It was situated at Beal in North Yorkshire, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Knottingley in West Yorkshire, on the A645[1] and 3.6 miles (5.8 km) east of Ferrybridge power station. The colliery's location was influenced by the proximity of road, rail, and canal routes. Its workings extended into West Yorkshire. The colliery was owned and operated by UK Coal. The colliery closed on 18 December 2015.[2] Its closure marked the end of the era of deep-pit coal mining in Britain.

Got up at 5am 2 Sundays in a row glad I went back for the second visit as we found the medical room.
visited with Host, SDW, Camera Shy and a non member.

We headed for one of the 2 head stocks going past some of the coal processing sheds/buildings on the way, not much to see in them.

On the way up you get to see the controls

Then up to the next floor for the winding gear

Then off to the second head stock we came to which also led on to the bath house, lockers/changing rooms, offices, canteen and medical. the best one to get in to if you visit.

At the top of the second head stock we visited

Again you come to the winding control rooms 1 level below the winding gear.

Back down and along the walk way to the lamp room and workshop (the lamp room has been stripped)

Yep there's literally hundreds of bin bags full of stuff piled up along the corridor that runs through the locker rooms.

The locker room does look tidier than when I was there.
