Abandoned psychiatric hospital

My 3rd explore with my companion

Opened in 1888 and closed in 2009.

Was privately run until it joined the NHS in 1948.

A lot of history available on this on the county asylum website

After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and patient numbers reduced significantly. In the late 1990s eleven men died in unusual circumstances at the hospital: an inquiry revealed that food and drink had been deliberately withheld. The hospital finally closed in December 2009. Most of the buildings have since been demolished and the site redeveloped by Kier Group. The hospital finally closed in December 2009.

Latest developments from 2019 - application of it being turned into an 80 bed care home, retirement living apartments and a coffee shop.

Well when I went the hole ha only been opened about a week earlier by some drug users. But think it has been sealed again - I got in the biggest building, but the smaller one (that looks like a new house at the front near the main road) was totally sealed so I couldn’t get in that. And the ones closer to the Kier site were also open too but I ran out of time so didn’t get chance to go in.

Saw them knocking down Bramble House this week, I don't think they're saving any of the other buildings from what I've read.

It was demolished in 2011 - the thread name here is a bit misleading as this is Bramble House which was the old nurses accommodation.

Disappointing that the developer chose to demolish it as it was fairly sound internally and would have fit in with a residential-home type scheme pretty well?
