1. The History
On the outskirts of Belgium's major industrial city of Liège, SNCB’s former rolling stock maintenance workshops at Kinkempois closed around 2018. The massive depot was used for maintaining locomotives, EMUs and coaches. The site became surplus to requirements when a new depot on the opposite side of the main line was developed by SNCB Technics at a total cost of €78m. Since then, the engine sheds, offices and associated outbuildings have been left abandoned.
2. The Explore
Visited early one morning on a very dull day one quiet December morning. Having looked back at a recent video on YouTube of this place, in just heading over to the main sheds, I missed some interesting bits of this vast site. For example, I didn’t venture in the long signal box/admin building, but wished I had of done now as, although on the whole it was an empty shell, one room still had all the manual point switching levers in situ. Nor the big admin block at the end of the sheds. Anyhow, still enough of interest captured and pictures for a decent report.
3. The Pictures
Bonus water tower on the way in:
On to the sheds:
Not been many trains along here for some time:
And pretty easy access:
And we’re in:
The old electrics:
Some old school graff dating back to when the place was operational:
This one made me chortle…
More admin/office space:
Some bits have started to decay:
And back out to the sheds:
