Derbyshire Royal Infirmary was established in 1810 but the original hospital was demolished 80 years later following a Typhoid outbreak in 1890. Four years later and Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the new hospital which upon completion featured the domed towers and a long central corridor.
Various additions to the site were completed over the years to accommodate new facilities such as a new accident and emergency department in 1970, this created a real jigsaw feel to the place.
The majority of the infirmary eventually closed to the public in 2009.
I visited this place back in 2014 to have a good poke through all the stuff that was left behind. There was plenty of buttons to push and hospital based equipment to play with. Wandering through the A&E department and bumping into metal fairies was interesting... having said that once they had been introduced to a good old English cup of tea and a bourbon they were nice as pie.
Main Hospital
Children's wards
Anyone else remember Tixylix?
Other bits
