Majestic Culverts - Oldham
It's been a long time since I last wadered up, so a balmy summers evening seemed to ideal
opportunity to meet up with Marsden and Madeye to take a look at a few nice culverts in Waterhead.
Last time out, the water levels were pretty low, and the flow was non existant, not so this
time as a heavy downpour meant I got to dip the crown jewels to cool off
We started downstream next to Majestic Mill, and headed up through the silt,
and debris, pausing every so often to admire the fish.
Looking back towards the outfall from the concrete box section
fairly soon it opens up into some nice looking brickwork, its slippy as fook underfoot
an unexpected surprise which I smelt coming from 200 yards away...sewer fresh
downstream from the mouth of the in-fall showing the mix of brick and variety of structure
the overflow from the river above, a bit too slippy to climb but very picturesque nonetheless
the second section of culvert runs underneath the remnants of Orb Mill, demolished in 2004
brick built and containing a few interesting bits and pieces left over from the mill, water
levels were much higher this time round and there were some evil looking drain spiders
this culverts a fair old trek, not ankle breaking, but uneven, stoopy and slippy in places
It eventually opens out into a jungle of nettles, bramble and ferns, thankfully its easy
enough to climb up the bank and out behind the school
3 blokes dressed in rubber, hanging round the back of a school with cameras..
whats the worst that could happen ? thanks for looking
