About a year ago we visited Maltby. As one of the last working collierys left in the UK it is closure was therefore one of our last chances to see a fully intact pit and see it we did! The only really significant part we didn't see back last year was the Bath House. As Dave and Joe found out when they tried to explore it a few weeks after us and bumped into a man having a shower it was very much still in use. However with more or less a whole year past since then it was about time we went back for another check and what do you know, Its now totally disused and not only that, it feels like it could have been dead for years!
The NCB era arcitecture is plain to see. In parts it was very original with its glass bricks and open stairwells but in parts it had been quite modernised. Upstairs the baths had been removed and the whole are turned into offices and stores. Not a wholly bad thing as there was just so much to rummage through up there i forgot to take any photos!
We worked our way across the top floor untill we got to the Lamp Room. This is probably the best ive seen. Totally intact and full of 100s of discarded lamps and self rescuers
Last up the baths themselves. The traditional tiled partitions were not present here but the usual lockers were.
Go check it out. It might be your last chance.
