Report - Maltby Colliery, March '14

Explored with OT.

After finding out that demo was well under way here we made it a priority for our weekend roadtrip. Coal prep gone, or al least most of it has, and headstocks soon to join them. For a weekend evening the site was rather busy, cars, men, and very loud dance music were all things which required avoiding. OT and I managed to climb one headstock, which was the more modern style, having the winding house on top.

Not wanting to push our luck and having a crippled Turkey in the car we decided to retreat for now and head home.

There is still what is left of coal prep, the other headstock and countless other buildings... I would advise folks to get there ASAP if you want to see one of the last pits we will ever get the chance to explore in Britain.

The wheels were housed in this uninspiring cage

which luckily had unlocked doors

...also to be avoided are the legions of dome cameras, and the 980m+ shaft surrounded by heras fencing. Definitely worth a trip back, everyone should be on this.

whats the bet's on they will use the brick and hardcore from round the site after demo to choke the shaft after they prep the bottom of the shaft. i know the buildings round ocean colliery garw got used like this
