So i went for a wander with a few friends the other day, took quite a while to locate due to all the building work surrounding it and being able to get to it unseen.
We managed to get down to the huge pile at the second ventilation shaft, we decided to turn back there due to not really having the right clothing to try climb over it.
We will be going back and seeing if we can get the whole way through the tunnel.
I am no sort of professional photographer by any means and i do not have a fancy camera but i hope you all enjoy the photos, wonderfully creepy place, well worth a visit.
Here is a little bit if history but there is a previous report on here that goes into much more detail.
It was set up initially for Notts and Derbyshire coalfields. It was open to passenger traffic on 1 February, 1876.
It was known as the 'back line' - because it went round the back of Nottingham... this was mainly for the coalfields and then extended to passenger traffic up until 4 April, 1960.
It had two tunnel collapses, caused by mining subsidence, in Mapperley. The first one was 1925 and the second one in 1960 and actually closed the tunnel.
Rather than repair it British Rail at the time just decided to close it in the end.
A few from ontop of the entrance.
