Chelmsford. "the birth place of radio"
[wiki] - In 1899, Guglielmo Marconi opened the world's first "wireless" factory under the name The Marconi Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in Hall Street employing around 50 people. The company was later called the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company Ltd. For this reason Chelmsford is credited as the "birthplace of radio".
The New Street site including the Grade II listed front façade remains empty, derelict and vandalised with its future uncertain much to the dismay of Marconi Veterans.
I went on a solo mission to this factory. After reading other reports i was a little anxious about the security. Chelmsford's huge police HQ is less than a minutes walk from the site and i really didn't want to end up there !
It all worked out good, even though i had to walk directly under a infrared sensor. There was no alternative due to the layout and fences. It did not make a sound, so I expected it was not working. I didn't hang around to find out
Anyway, here are a few pic's.....
