History
Known locally as ‘The Megatron’, this Victorian-engineered subterranean drainage system was built in the mid-1800s below the city centre running directly underneath the cities train station and contains a network of cathedral-like brick archways and interconnecting darkened tunnels to contain the overflow of water from a storm.
The impressive vault-like tunnel system was constructed in an effort to channel the huge flow of water from the three main rivers (Sheaf, Porter and the Don) that run through Sheffield, and contain the overflow following a storm.
The Explore
Had this place pinned for a while and finally headed down back in june when it was quite dry,started at the porter brook culvert which was quite easy to get to and followed it through a slight bent over walk shortly before emerging out in the open again, The river trust now do organised trips with the public down here and after watching a video of one its quite surprising how the majority of people on these tours dont have head torches and are all touching/holding on to the ceiling but when lit up this section is crawling in spiders along the ceiling something which is always tricky to capture on camera.There was some sections that were to deep for the waders to venture but mostly they held up pretty good, in most culverts ive been to there seems to the bottom seems to have random tyre paths and sections of what feels like quick sand.
having not been here before but seen a lot of reports on this place we was expecting to encouter a large chamber which took us by surprise by how big it really is.
