Merseyway Stockport has to be one of those explores that may not be the most beautiful of structure's but if concrete and a bit of a challenge is your thing then this is for you, for me however this has great historical value to stockport's development. the river goyt/tame meet just down river joining the mersey then head's out to liverpool, the bridge pictured is the Lancaster Bridge picture cicra 1900 and stands on a very significant area, records show that there was a small wooden fort dated around AD74 to control the ford, the site is now called castle yard and is probably the oldest occupied part of town, during its time there have been two significant times of the bridge's life the first been during the English civil war Royalist Prince Rupert came into stockport from cheadle and sent the defending parliamentarians of colonel duckinfield packing in disarray, 1745 saw Bonnie Prince Charlie advancing towards London to claim the crown for the Stewart's , in an attempt to delay him soldiers from liverpool destroyed the bridge but to no avail. the bridge was later rebuilt by the Buxton Turnpike Trust, the bridge or where it was now sits under the mersey way shopping centre, Halifax to be exact, the mersey way tunnel was built in the 1930's and stands on stilts and follows the river east to west, there were plans to open up some of the above street with a glass viewing platform so people can see what lies beneath, but why be a tourist..
