Report - Mold Train Station, Flintshire, Wales - August 2020

I’m new to this so bare with me sorry if I have done anything wrong but I have recently started exploring my area around north wales and a friend mentioned to me about Mold train station I personally didn’t even know it had one but we ent to explore and was very interesting to be honest thanks for accepting me onto the group these were taken on the 16/08/2020

Looks like you have come across the private narrow gauge collection of Ian Jolly. Opened in 1976 and has various gauges of rolling stock and a 1/4 mile of track. For the record - Mold railway station opened on 14 August 1849 as the terminus of a double-track line from the Chester and Holyhead Railway, starting at Saltney near Chester. It was joined in September 1869 by Mold and Denbigh Junction Railway. In January 1892 a line opened between Mold and Coed Talon, which was extended in 1898 to Brymbo. The external service ceased in 1950. Mold station closed for passengers in 1962, and closed completely on 4 May 1964. The site of the station has been occupied since the 1990s by a supermarket - probably explains why you didn't know it had a station.

Did you walk further down the tack bed because there is meant to be an historical standard gauge Simplex locomotive there on the old Mold to Denbigh line.

Yeh it’s now Tesco I didn’t know it had a station at all to be honest I got told by a friend so I had to go explore was interesting be honest never been exploring before and this as a first one I was made up

This is a Motor Rail 'Simplex Loco', built by the Motor Rail Company (works no. 1944) and sold to the Flint Paper Mill, Oakenholt in December 1919 with a 40 hp petrol engine had been replaced in 1959 with a 40 hp diesel engine. In 1965 it was sold to the Synthite company, to shunt the sidings of their Alyn Works at Rhydymwyn - a former tinplate works - which was rail-served after the rest of the line was abandoned, Rail traffic ceased in 1983 and the line was lifted soon afterwards The loco was sold by 1986 to Mr Ian Jolly of Mold.

if you carry on further down too I walked for quite a while you come to some sort of raf valley or something I’ve got pics of that too but that’s for another post

yeah its quite a nice explore, I had a look at it last year, Did you approach from over the stream? I also found a ruin just up the hill from the trains.

No I actually parked up on the mold denbeigh road and jumped over the barriers on the road and walked for about 20 mins through trees and fields etc to get here was a good walk to be fair the stream wasn’t too far away from where I was tho from what I can remember interesting find

for anyone wanting to visit this one its far easiest visiting from here (53.177069, -3.176356) to the right of this persons driveway there's a little public path which is quite steep at points, alot closer and you have a little purpose made bridge over the Alyn.

It's a very interesting find, saw it on geograph so i had to make the visit last year.
