Visited with OT, UJ, Pirate, and we also bumped into Mr. Bodymassagemachine and his friend
Mount Pleasant is a Limestone quarry in the Coombe Down area, close to the centre of Bath. Parts of the quarry have been injected with concrete, and also many parts have received various methods of reinforcement. Walking round, and it is apparent why. The rooves in the end workings of the quarry are very unstable, the faults in the ceiling cracking the rock into small slabs waiting to fall.
Mouldy Health & Safety act poster. Maybe these have been reinforced for quite a few years now
The different methods of Reinforcement used make the quarry a real mix and match of construction.
Concrete...
Wood...
...and Steel
And not forgetting the RCP Bat Tunnel. The acoustics and the echo in here were something else. Make the smallest of sounds and you get a reverberated, squealing echo down the tunnel.
You'd hate to stumble into the tunnel and hear those sounds coming from the top. But soon enough we saw torchlight at the end, and come to think of it, they could've probably heard us a mile away what with the echo. It was Mrbodymassage and his friend Sideshow Bob.
We went back into the old workings, some of which were vet wet and muddy. Lots of water seeping through the rock meant lots of Calcite Formations
and lots of Cave/Mine Pearls.
The quarry would appear to be a shadow of its former self though. There are many artifacts laying around, such as some tools, kettles, bottles, but also lots of rubbish. But what with the injections you cant help but think what other remnants were drowned in concrete never to be seen again.
Thanks to Mrbodymassage and his friend for their knowledge, and everyone for coming along, top night
