The Murton Victoria Club, or known locally as “The Big Club†only closed down 2 months ago, so I was quite surprised at the deteriorating state of the place inside. Some of the upstairs rooms have so much damp, rot and damage… it was really quite sad to see. I nearly didnt bother taking any pictures, as the place is stripped, but there were still a few features dotted about, so after a mooch about, I decided on getting the camera out to document its current state.
From Sunderland Echo: -
“A DEDICATED team gave it three years’ grace – but Murton Victoria Club has had to close its doors.
While modern buildings have replaced and extended the club, it is thought it has existed in some form on Church Street for more than 100 years.
The bar would have closed in 2011 had the debt owned by the club not been bought and largely paid off by a management company.
A committee of volunteers set about doing what they could to turn around its fortunes and make cuts to run it efficiently, but after a downturn in trade and increase in bills, it has closed.â€
Visited at ‘daft-o-clock’ on a bloomin’ freezing morning with Stranton.
