History

Andrew Heiton Senior and his son, Andrew Heiton Junior, were prominent Scottish architects in the 19th century. Andrew Heiton Senior, born around 1793, was known for his work on various buildings, including railway stations and country houses. He established a successful architectural practice in Perth, Scotland.

In 1855, the father-son duo designed several notable structures, including the Newmiln House near Guildtown. This mansion is a fine example of their Italianate architectural style, featuring a large, asymmetrical design with a three-story tower and red sandstone with buff dressings.

Andrew Heiton Senior died on 8 August 1858 , leaving Andrew Heiton Junior to continue the practice as sole partner.

In the early 20th century, it was owned by the MacRae family, who were prominent in the local community..
During World War II, the house was requisitioned by the government and used as a convalescent home for soldiers.

In more recent times, Newmiln House gained attention when it was purchased by Prince Abdul Aziz al-Thani of Qatar. The house was then used as a luxurious retreat, hosting celebrities like Liam Neeson, Jude Law and Kate Moss. Additionally, the Monaco football team directors stayed there before a game at McDiarmid Park in 1999, and Doug Ellis, the former chairman of Aston Villa, was also a guest.

Its been in the news a few times and this was the headline in 2007

"A LEADING hotelier rammed his Land Rover at speed into a car occupied by his mistress after discovering she was seeing another man"

He was then caught with more than 700 rounds of illegal ammunition at the exclusive hotel he helped run with his wife.

A Tragic Tale - something else I found online

The story of the young maid at Newmiln House is a tragic and haunting tale. According to local legend, the maid was a young woman who worked in the house during the late 19th century. One fateful evening, she was hurrying down the grand staircase when she lost her footing and fell. The fall was severe, and she tragically died from her injuries.

There was a door at the top of the stairs that led to the tiniest of wooden spiral stairs leading up to a small tower
