Newport Transporter Bridge
The Newport Transporter Bridge is the UK's tallest and oldest transporter bridge still standing, opening in September 1906 (Tees and Mersey 1911 & 1916) at 54m above high tide level (Tees and Mersey 49m & 27m) It's my favourite of the three left in the UK, too. I've been three times now but wasn't satisfied with my pics until recently. First time it poured down, second i just missed sunset but third time I got up early and caught one of the nicest sunrises I've ever seen.
Below is an interesting link with lots of facts and figures to blow your mind - it being an engineering website and all that. Who would've thought that in 1906 a bridge built in the UK would be designed in metric units and built by contractors working in imperial. Apparently that caused some confusion (i could imagine) and resulted in the bridge being heavier than expected!

It also looks fantastic when lit up at night! Shame the rain was so heavy, made for some nice effects though.

I much preferred the calm twilight of a Spring night, when i went to the top. The 360 panoramic view of the city, river and bridge is pretty special, especially as the river doubles back sharply.....
...so i thought I'd take advantage of the recent good weather and get up early one Monday morning. I'm glad I did now, I would have been gutted (and tired) if it turned out to be cloudy!
...and across to the other tower
....back down and off to work
Thanks for lookin'
