History
Opened in 1992, Niche began as a small side-street club, just outside Sheffield City Centre. This specific club was closed in 2005 after a large police raid. However, although it had a notoriously bad reputation, for gang culture, violence and drug misuse, this venue was legendary for its musical genre known as ‘baseline’; to the extent that the name ‘Niche’ is time and again used as alternative tag for baseline music. The original Niche Nightclub is now derelict (discounting the many pigeons in the top floor rooms), but, once inside it still offers a little taste of the past.
Our Version of Events
I’ve been waiting to visit this site for many years, and have looked at it on many occasions. Initially, we had set out to explore a smaller section of Sheffield’s famous drainage system, however, a slight oversight on the depth of the water, and the apparent lack of wading equipment (despite having had decent weather for much of the week), meant that it was an early night for us. Nonetheless, on our reluctant return home we passed Niche and decided to investigate. The night was not over after all…
