The Nimrod MR2 was an RAF maritime surveillance, anti submarine and anti surface warfare aircraft designed by Hawker Siddeley, now part of BAE systems. There were 51 built in total, including 2 prototypes, and they were in service with the RAF from 1969 until March 2010, when it was due to be replaced/upgraded to the Nimrod MRA4, which was later cancelled.
This particular one made its last flight on 26th May 2010 from RAF kinloss to Manston airport in thanet where it stood before being moved to Manston MOD Defence Fire Training and Development Centre on June 7th. Although it seems to of had a lot of the radar/sonar equipment stripped out but still quite photogenic.
After sitting there a little while I decided to go and have a look. Afew people had asked for permission, but after rumours of a permission visit faded out I went for walk to see how close i could get! Originally went there on my own to have a little look around but after an unbelieveable stroke of luck and having my camera it would have been rude not too! Went back for a return visit with frosty, maniac and teebs.
Pic time........
thanks for looking......
