Roburite Explosive Company, established in 1887, principally supplying explosives to the mining industry. The factory straddled the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and had a special narrow gauge railway to transport workers around the site. In 1918 the company was taken over by ICI, eventually closing in 1981.
The factory, with characteristically scattered workshops to prevent chain reaction explosions, stands in a well-wooded area that has developed into a wildlife haven over the last 100 years, it even had a visit from “gwapple my gwapefruits†David Bellamy,
“Ultra threatened bats and colonies of Britain’s rarest amphibians have quietly developed into a rich eco system that has been named and hailed by renowned botanist David Bellamy.â€
The site is due to be developed into an exclusive housing development.
The top end of the site still remains active but this has not stopped the thieving pikey cnuts from doing their thing, this place was intact at the start of the week.
Visted over a couple of days with Copy Cat, Scrawper, th'owd Badger and Pitmon Billy.
