On April 6th 2009, at around 3am, the region of Abruzzo in central Italy was devastated by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that devastated the central town of L'aquila as well as many other surrounding villages, killing over 300 and rendering homeless over 60,000 people. This hospital was a victim of the devastation and has been lying in a state of extreme disrepair ever since. I visited in October 2022 and found the entire site to be in a terrible state with much of the roof having collapsed and huge cracks running along the floors and up almost every wall. Miraculously, however, the mortuary remains almost untouched and even had items of human remains left behind including bones on the table and blood samples left in the fridge. Sadly, within the last few months, the mortuary has been subject to vandalism and one of the tables has been badly smashed up. In light of this, I've decided to post how it was when I explored. Enjoy the photos!
